Introducing Ben Webster and Jamiya - connecting refugees to higher education

NAME
Ben Webster

WHAT IS YOUR COMPANY / PROJECT?
Jamiya Project: we open up accredited online university courses for refugees by linking up refugee academics with European universities and local learning centres.

WHY WAS IT SET UP?
There are 100,000 Syrian refugees who can’t higher education; 99% of refugees worldwide cannot either. We want to change that.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING YOU HAVE LEARNT ALONG THE WAY?
Don’t start from scratch. Make use of what already exists to test your idea. You’ll probably find ten new ones along the way.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO TAKE YOUR COMPANY / PROJECT NEXT?
We’re piloting our approach at the moment;

HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED?
Email me: ben@jamiya.org

WHY DID YOU JOIN EDSPACE?
To meet others like-minded entrepreneurs and get their ideas on my own work.

WHAT CAN YOU TEACH? (ANYTHING YOU ARE SKILLED AT OR PASSIONATE ABOUT)
Perhaps not so useful in the context of EdTech, but a few things self taught or studied along the way: civil conflict analysis; the guitar; music production software; econometrics.
